Do You Watch Netflix During Work Hours?
The latest show I binge-watched on Netflix is Beef. Season 2 is an intense drama inside a Californian private members club owned by a Korean woman with more than a few secrets of her own (no spoilers). After I watched finishing the show, Netflix recommended a behind-the-scenes podcast with the directors and producers walking through their thought process.
Then last week, Netflix and Spotify jointly acquired the video rights to Jay Shetty's podcast On Purpose for $100 million. As part of the deal, Jay Shetty will take his podcast off YouTube.
Made me wonder: why is Netflix suddenly trying to be a podcast platform?
A few reasons that actually make a lot of sense (also what the management said on their earnings call):
Podcasts are cheap to produce and generate loyal repeat audiences. $100 million split between Spotify & Netflix over multiple years is a rounding error compared to what a single prestige TV season costs.
The time-of-day problem. Most people don’t watch Netflix during daytime . Podcasts are a daytime format—commutes, lunch, errands. Podcasts allow Netflix to capture a time where it has had historically less engagement.
Mobile. People don’t watch TV and film on mobile phones. Podcasts are native to it. Netflix showing up on a screen where it had almost no presence.
The real competitor for Netflix isn't HBO or Disney+. It's YouTube. You never run out of things to watch on YouTube. Netflix is betting that if it can pull premium creators like Jay Shetty off YouTube exclusively, audience habit follows.

Congrats to Jay Shetty - his career is a masterclass in how to build a media empire. He was a Hindu monk before he became a content creator. 25 million+ Instagram and TikTok followers, 9 million YouTube subscribers, 1 billion listens on his podcast in seven years — guests like Michelle Obama, Oprah, Tom Holland.
The Netflix / Spotify deal puts him in the same bracket as Joe Rogan ($250M with Spotify) and Alex Cooper ($125M with SiriusXM).
Not bad for a monk.

If you're a finance person? Teach AI for financial modeling. You're in content? Teach AI for content creation. You're an artist? Teach AI for design. You don't need to build the next killer app. You just need to be one step ahead of the room you're standing in.
Just start sharing what you know online and develop a product around it.
This might not be the sexiest AI business. But probably one with the lowest barriers to entry and the highest margins. It also allows you the time to figure out what to build (if you want to build a product).

Open AI has 716 open roles while Anthropic is marketing at least 350 open roles on its careers page. The most interesting ones I find are the field marketing, content & FDE roles that pay upwards of 250k.
I personally believe its the best time in the history to be a marketer.
